For my husband’s birthday this year, I mixed a few edible gifts in with the typical store-bought ones. In case you are looking for ideas, here’s what I made:
Mint Simple Syrup. He can use it for mint juleps or in sparking water or tea. I put it in a mason jar and wrapped it up in tissue paper.
Raspberry-Mint-Lemon-Pineapple Sage Iced Tea. I make a pitcher of herbal, red, green, or white iced tea most every day of the summer when I’m home from work. (I love my iced tea maker.) Then I send a bottle back to work with David when he comes home for his lunch break. That way, he drinks less soda and gets more antioxidants. ;) To make the birthday tea a little more special, I used a pretty basic tea flavor (raspberry), and added lemon slices and sprigs of mint and pineapple sage after it was finished steeping.
Homemade Granola. The recipe is from Nigella Lawson’s cookbook Feast.
Apple Crumble. I found the recipe on Green Kitchen Stories, and am so glad I did. It was a little more crumbly than I expected, a lot like a soft granola with apple pieces in it. But I love that it gives a healthy makeover to a traditional dessert. I may play around with it and see how it works with a layer of fruit on the bottom and a layer of the oat mixture on top.
