Sumo Sushi Boat & Kabul Afghan Cuisine

July 22, 2011

I’d love to share two of my family’s very favorite Bay Area restaurants with you. I know you may not live anywhere near there, but who knows, maybe one day you’ll find yourself visiting… and hungry! You can dine in or carry out at both places.

Most of my family has grown to love sushi, some more quickly and easily than others, of course. Our top destination is Sumo in downtown Los Altos. The atmosphere is average, but the service is outstanding and the sushi is high quality. We almost always take advantage of the lunch special, which offers two sushi rolls of your choice with miso soup and salad for $13.95. Considering that this is the Bay Area and some of the fancier sushi costs 11.95 for just one roll on the dinner menu, this is really a fantastic deal for a delicious lunch. One of my family’s favorites is the unique mixture of honey-glazed walnuts and some sort of light-tasting mayo that stars in the walnut avocado and the walnut prawn rolls. The picture above is the vegetarian rainbow roll and the shiitake avocado maki. You can get any roll made with brown rice instead of white for 50 cents extra.

Sumo is located at 355 State Street in peaceful, pedestrian-friendly downtown Los Altos. If your family is anything like my family, you may soon have their phone number, (650) 941-9898, memorized. They’re open Monday – Thursday 11:30 – 9:00, and Friday – Saturday 11:30 – 9:30.

A restaurant that has more recently become a frequent desination is Kabul in Sunnyvale. Okay, when you drive up to it you will find that it is in a strip mall. But! Inside there are white tableclothes, low lighting, an attentive and detail-oriented staff, amazing smells, and the kind of food that keeps you coming back regularly. Our family favorite is the kadu, which is cooked chunks of pumpkin topped with seasonings and special yogurt sauce. (The non-vegetarian orders also have a ground meat on them.) You can get it as a side dish or entree, and it is absolutely delicious on its own or over rice. Some members of my family have actually started ordering two side dish portions of it, in fact.

You’ll find Kabul at 833 W. El Camino Real in Sunnyvale, in the back corner of the shopping center behind Jack in the Box. They serve lunch Monday – Friday from 11:30 to 2:00, and dinner everyday from 5:30 to 11:00. You can reach them at (408) 245-4350.

I normally wouldn’t be interested in restaurants in the Bay area, but I’m headed out there for work, so maybe I can stop by!! I think I’ll actually be in Sunnyvale…

Oh my gosh Jenny, what great timing! How lucky. If you feel like trying Afghan food, Kabul is totally delicious. They have plenty of other stuff besides kadu too, we just think that is the best. :) And you can dine in or call ahead to order whatever you want to go! It is on the main thoroughfare, El Camino Real, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to find from wherever you are in Sunnyvale, but let me know if you need help. I hope you have a good trip! What will you be doing out there?
