Green Smoothie

The other day I wanted a nutritious breakfast drink (and a way to use up some of the kale stash in our fridge) and this is what I came up with. I didn’t add any sweetener, berries, protein powder, or almond milk because I liked the delicate, organic, fruit and vegetable flavor.

Green Smoothie

2  small – medium bananas, sliced and then frozen on a cookie sheet for at least 2 hours

1 pear, cut into pieces, or 1 cup pineapple chunks, or 1 cup honeydew

1/2 avocado, broken into chunks

2 big handfuls baby spinach leaves (2-3 heaping cups)

1 small handful kale leaves, torn into pieces (1 scant cup, or less)

juice from 1 lime

1/2 cup water

Combine all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth, stopping periodically to push unblended pieces down or add more water as needed. I’d go easy on the kale at first and add more to taste. It has a distinctive flavor when it is raw, and if you get too much in there it is hard to balance out!

Yields 2 smoothies about the size of the one pictured above.
