I became aware of these 100% and 50% raw chocolate bars today. At first I thought, “Oh, a healthyish chocolate. I’ll share it on my Facebook page later.” But, the more I read about the unique flavors and the story behind the bars, the more interested I became. Fast forward to now, when I decided to dedicate a whole post to them, and may very well splurge on the pair of raw bars for $16. Plus $7 shipping. Good thing I still have my day job! :)
This tasty small business is New York-based Antidote. They’ve taken years to source high-quality ingredients, fine-tune every detail of production, and create tantalizing flavors like banana with cayenne; lemon with rose salt; ginger with gooseberry; almond with fennel; and mango with juniper.
The 77% and 84% cacao bars contain minimal amounts of unrefined cane sugar, and the two 100% cacao raw bars (speckled with cacao nibs or dates) have no added sugar at all. None of the bars have added fats, and they’re organic, vegan, gluten-free, and made from cacao produced sustainably at fair wages in an indigenous Ecuadorian village. Seriously. What more could you ask for?
Here’s a snippet of the founding story from the website:
Red R. Thalhammer [an award-winning, native Austrian graphic and packaging designer] was moody one evening in October 2009, and a dear friend suggested he would make an antidote for her blues. It was a play on words via text message, but Red started to think about the actual possibility and existence of one – what form, shape, flavor or taste would the Antidote have and could it be possible to have one for each particular circumstance. She woke up the next morning with the idea to translate all these ideas and emotions into a chocolate bar. She had been unsatisfied with chocolate bars oversaturated with sugar and lacking the spectacular taste of real cacao. This Antidote bar would focus first and foremost on taste in coexistence with health, due to cacao’s natural superfood status.
You can read more on the Antidote site if you’d like. There are too many intriguing pieces of information for me to try to convey concisely!
You can buy Antidote chocolates at these stores nationwide and in Bermuda, or online; single bars and packs of 6 and 12 are sold here, and giftier sets of 2, 3, 6, 10, and 12 bars in varieties of flavors can be found here.) I’m already salivating.
