Have you guys ever visited Oh Hello, Friend? Danni is so cute and inspiring. I’ve really enjoyed following her and seeing all her crafty, papery, businessy, and creative projects. She is talented, fun, and unique.
One idea of hers that really stuck with me is a handmade gift she calls a “book of notes.” Basically she makes several supportive, encouraging notes, and tucks them into cute envelopes, attaches them to pages with washi tape, has little strings and buttons to open, etc. You can see a couple of her books here and here. And, she even sells a cute package of supplies to create a book of notes like hers here.
I got the chance to create a book of notes when a friend at work who has been so, so generous to me since I moved here told me about a struggle she and her husband have been facing for two entire years and hardly shared with anyone! It was a great reminder that even when people are beautiful, cheerful and sweet, you just never know what challenges and heartbreaks are tearing them apart inside.
So I decided this was my big chance to try to return all the kindnesses she has shown to me! I found a blank sketchbook at Barnes & Noble for about $10.
Then I pulled out all my notecards, envelopes, stickers, washi tape, tags, ribbon, and markers. I spent a whole weekend morning working on the book, but it really didn’t take as long as I thought it would. (Although I also clearly didn’t put in as many details and decorations as I could have.)
I mainly filled it up with quotes, song lyrics, and notes from us to them.
David and I included a mix CD of encouraging songs, a certificate for movie tickets, and a restaurant gift card inside the book. I made an envelope of relaxation-inducing tea bags to tie on top once it was wrapped.
I left most of the pages blank, so that our friends could use them to collect other pieces of inspiration/encouragement and document their journey.
When my friend opened it, she cried before she had even really been able to see all the parts of it. Later, she called her mom to tell her about it, and her mom cried on the phone too! Yes, Danni, this is an amazing gift idea. So glad you shared it!
It took us a lot of brainstorming to come up with the songs for the encouraging mix CD, so I’ll list our ideas here, in case you happen to want to make a similar playlist sometime.
