Bodega Bay was the very first place we wanted to see when we moved here. It’s one of the coastal villages peppered up and down California’s famed Highway 1 and the closest point where we can access the water, only about 30 minutes from our house.
The town is small and sleepy, tucked alongside a quiet inlet of water that is separated from the Pacific Ocean by two peninsulas. You may recognize it from scenes in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. It was also the site of the first Russian structures built in California, in 1809.
We walked on a few of the little paths with ocean views, and admired the rocks, crashing waves, and small sandy beach. There’s an island just off the coast that appeared to be covered in very vocal sea lions, their throaty calls filling the air.
Lunch was enjoyed at a pleasant little place David found online called the Fishetarian Fish Market, founded by a man whose wife was a vegetarian before she met him and became a “fishetarian” after. They serve gourmet fish and chips, sprinkle fresh green parsley on their French fries, and display a surprising number of gluten-free cookies and snacks on their counter. Every chair in the dining room was filled by a mix of motorcyclists and families.
I love the coast. Ever since I was little, I’ve connected with the salty sea air, the sound of the waves, and the feeling of being on the edge of the world. I’m already itching to go back.
Maybe you’re wondering what we’ve been eating lately, since food posts have been woefully infrequent around here? We’re still settling in and haven’t gotten back into our normal routine of inspired, leisurely cooking yet. Plus, we haven’t bought a bookcase, so all my beloved cookbooks are still in boxes, which I paw around in when I miss them. But a few of the meals and snacks we’ve been repeating lately are:
- avocado smashed on whole grain toast with salt and pepper (I’m loving the loaves from this local organic bakery)
- kale, pineapple, and a splash of water blended together into a smoothie
- brown rice, white beans, or salad topped with sun-dried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, and kalamata olives
- big salads tossed with either fruit and nuts (his) or beans and whatever veggies are in the fridge (hers)
- handfuls of crunchy snap peas
- vegan pho from our new favorite casual, close-to-home, never-fail eatery, Goji Kitchen

I’m writing this post from the patio, my favorite part of the house and the site of our only “real” furniture besides our bed and couch.
I watched a few of Jeff Novick’s DVDs and thought they were fairly entertaining and packed full of useful information about nutrition and healthful eating. Maybe your library has them? I felt like I learned a great deal.
